Pique Opens Up About Van Gaal Ridiculing Him At Barcelona Posted: 13 Oct 2016 11:20 PM PDT

Barcelona defender, Gerard Pique has revealed how he was ridiculed and told he was not good enough for the club by Van Gaal. The centre back talks about how Van Gaal, who was manager then, pushed him to the floor and told him he won’t make it at the club. Speaking to TV3 , Pique said: “You never knew if he would be the first-team coach when you got there. He pushed me, he threw me to the floor. He told me I wasn’t strong enough to be a Barcelona player. “He destroyed me. At Barcelona we didn’t do gym work until the age of 18. That was really hard.” Pique has since gone on to prove Van Gaal’s assessment wrong, enjoying a trophy-laden spell with the Catalan giants. The 29-year-old has made over 300 appearances in all competitions for the club and helped them win several honours including six Liga titles and three Champions League crowns. Rashford’s Dream: To Lift UCL With Manchester United Posted: 13 Oct 2016 11:15 PM PDT

Marcus Rashford has made his heart’s desire known, and it is to lift the UCL trophy with Manchester United. The teenage sensation has impressed since making his EPL debut, earning a call up to the England squad within six months of it. And even though Red Devils are not playing in the UCL, Rashford still has time to see his dream realised. “My biggest ambition in football? To win the Champions League with United,” he told the club’s official website. The 18-year-old sensation also has fond memories of his first ever game as a spectator, where he was wowed by a certain Portuguese star. “It was United v Real Madrid. I think I was only two or three years old,” he recalled. “My brother took me to that game. It was the one when (Cristiano) Ronaldo scored a hat-trick so it was a good first match for me.” Rashford has made 27 appearances so far for his club, scoring 12 goals. Westbrook Finds KD’s Selfless Comment About Warriors ‘Cute’ Posted: 13 Oct 2016 11:08 PM PDT

I expected this back and forth between KD and Westbrook and it as cute as the simple comment the Thunder’s Guard had for Durant’s recent Warriors evaluation. Kevin Durant recently made a comment about the Golden State Warriors, praising them for their “selfless” environment. “That’s cute,” Westbrook said. “Cute.” Durant was asked earlier this week why he chose the Warriors during free agency. “I feel really grateful to play for a team like that and play with a bunch of players who are selfless and enjoy the game in its purest form,” Durant said. “They make it about the players, they make it about the environment, so it was really an easy choice.” Westbrook, after being read Durant’s answer verbatim at shootaround on Thursday, was asked whether he felt like it was a shot at him or the Thunder franchise. “But my job is to worry about what’s going on here,” Westbrook said. “We’re going to worry about all the selfish guys we have over here apparently. So we’re going to figure that out.” And when asked Thursday whether it’s difficult not to take every comment Durant says as a jab at the Thunder. “I don’t care,” Westbrook said. “To me, it doesn’t matter. My job is to worry about here. Honestly, I’m really tired of talking about it. So, anytime anyone asks me another question, I’m just not going to answer.” The Thunder and Warriors play Nov. 3. Guardiola Can Change The Mentality Of English Football, Says Xavi Posted: 13 Oct 2016 11:02 PM PDT

Former Barcelona captain and veteran midfielder Xavi is confident in Guardiola’s ability to shake up English football. Xavi, 36, who currently plies his trade for Al Sadd SC won 14 major titles under the Spaniard over four seasons. He told BBC World Football: “If there is one person who can change the mentality of English players, of English football, it’s Pep Guardiola. “He is one of the best coaches. He could do a big revolution.” The former Barcelona coach stringed 10 straight wins together, before losing to Tottenham before the international break. “If you see the games of Manchester City you can see his style,” Xavi said. “As a player he was a big reference for my career, and as a coach. “We made history with him in Barcelona. Barcelona always have the best coaches but Guardiola made a revolution; not only at Barcelona but across the world. “When you see him on the bench you can see his passion for football. I know him and I know he can do it.” The post Guardiola Can Change The Mentality Of English Football, Says Xavi appeared first on
ICYMI: Kyrgios Fined By ATP For Unsportsmanlike Behaviour Posted: 13 Oct 2016 08:10 PM PDT

The ATP has slammed a $16,500 fine on Nick Kyrgios for violating the association’s code of conduct due to his unruly behaviour during a boring second-round loss to Mischa Zverev at the Shanghai Masters. The ATP announced the Australian tennis star got the maximum $10,000 fine for a “lack of best efforts” in the match, a $5,000 fine for verbal abuse of a spectator and another $1,500 for unsportsmanlike conduct. The 21-year-old rushed the match, losing 6-3 6-1, in a match that saw his serves and groundstrokes being struck with little effort. At a point, he walked towards his chair after sending a serve Zverev’s way without hanging around for a return. The Australian, known for his on-court antics and frequent battles with umpires and fans, also argued with a fan who questioned his sportsmanship during the match. While the crowd was booing and jeering Kyrgios, one man yelled, “Respect the game.” A furious Kyrgios shouted back, “You want to come here and play?” Asked later whether he thought he owed the spectators a better effort, Kyrgios turned defiant again. “What does that even mean? I’m good at hitting a tennis ball at the net. Big deal. I don’t owe them anything,” he said. “If you don’t like it, I didn’t ask you to come watch. Just leave.” Last year, Kyrgios insulted Stan Wawrinka during a match in Montreal and was fined $12,500, as well as a possible 28-day suspension and a further $25,000 fine if he picked up any other major offenses over the following six months. That probation period ended in February. Top-ranked Novak Djokovic said Thursday he believed Kyrgios has some “life lessons to learn.” “Not many great things are spoken about him lately,” Djokovic said. “I’m sorry to hear that, because I share the opinion of many players and many people in the tennis world that he’s one of the greatest talents the game has seen lately.” The post ICYMI: Kyrgios Fined By ATP For Unsportsmanlike Behaviour appeared first on
Steve Bruce Ready To Forgive Gabby Agbonlahor Posted: 13 Oct 2016 07:50 PM PDT

New Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce could be ready to bring Gabby Agbonlahor in from the cold. Agbonlahor has been banished from the first-team squad this season and has not played for the club since March. But Bruce said: “I’m not really interested in what has happened in the past. As far as I’m concerned this is under my remit. “Of course managers get problems to deal with but at this moment in time I’ve got none. I’ve only been here for 24 hours and as far as I’m concerned the slate is wiped clean for all of them. “We start again tomorrow. That obviously means Gabby too. He’s had his problems and it’s fair to say he and I have got to get him into some condition, but that applies to him too.” The post Steve Bruce Ready To Forgive Gabby Agbonlahor appeared first on
David Seaman Wants Arsene Wenger To Remain At Arsenal Posted: 13 Oct 2016 07:32 PM PDT

Former Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman hopes Arsene Wenger signs a new contract at the club. Wenger’s current deal is due to expire next summer and it is not clear whether he will continue. “For me, he is a great manager and if he signed another contract I would be delighted,” Seaman told talkSPORT. “I have worked with him, I know how good he is.” “I wouldn’t think he would take [the England job]. Once he is done with Arsenal, I think that might be it. He might take a step back into a director of football role. “I just think the England job might be too much for him. I have seen Arsene from when he first came to Arsenal to where is now and when you watch him on the bench, he is more animated, he loses his temper and throws water bottles, and I think that is not the Arsene Wenger I know.” Seaman won two Premier League titles under Wenger at Arsenal. Claudio Ranieri : Riyad Mahrez Never Bothered Me Posted: 13 Oct 2016 07:15 PM PDT

Claudio Ranieri has revealed that he was never concerned Riyad Mahrez would leave Leicester in the summer. There was speculation that Mahrez would quit the Foxes to join Arsenal. But Foxes boss Ranieri said today: “Never did he suggest he wanted to go to Arsenal. We were pleased to keep hold of our players, we made something special last season and we wanted to keep everybody.” “Only one went out, that is okay. I am very happy with all my players. The new, to the experienced, everybody. “It wasn’t so difficult to persuade Riyad to sign. I explained what our project is, he is one of our main players, and he is happy with us.” Ranieri admitted he may rotate his squad at Chelsea on Saturday ahead of Leicester’s next Champions League group game at home to FC Copenhagen on Tuesday. That could mean England midfielder Danny Drinkwater being rested at Stamford Bridge despite being fit again after a groin injury. Birmingham Manager Gary Rowsett Cautious About Takeover Posted: 13 Oct 2016 06:58 PM PDT

Birmingham boss Gary Rowett says he is enthused by the club’s impending takeover, but has warned against getting too carried away. The club is set to be taken over on Monday when Birmingham International Holdings Limited (BIHL) resumes trading on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Rowett told the club website: “We’ve seen too many owners go into clubs, blow a fortune and then three years later be in a completely different position. “I know there’s an excitement at your owners doing that, but I also think there’s an excitement about hoping you can keep improving because if you’re sat sixth in the Championship and you keep improving then at some point you’re going to have a very good chance of getting into the Premier League. “I hope there’s a really positive impact in terms of them coming in, but I don’t think I’m suddenly going to be sat here with a £10m training base in a year’s time and £10m to spend on one player and vast amounts on wages.” The post Birmingham Manager Gary Rowsett Cautious About Takeover appeared first on
Gordon Strachan To Remain As Scotland Coach… For Now Posted: 13 Oct 2016 06:56 PM PDT

According to various reports Gordon Strachan will stay on as Scotland manager. There been reports that he could face losing his job after the 3-0 defeat to Slovakia in midweek. But he will continue in the role and there are no plans to discuss his future. If Scotland are beaten by England on 11 November it is likely that Strachan will leave his post, almost certainly by mutual consent. The team would be six points behind the group leaders in that case with only one victory, against Malta, from four qualifiers. Strachan was always due to hold talks with the SFA on Thursday for a post-match debrief and the conversations followed a scheduled board meeting at which his position was discussed. The governing body’s directors want to give him the opportunity to turn around the team’s fortunes at Wembley. They are also aware that it will be much easier to find a suitable replacement in the four and half months between the England game and the next competitive match, at home to Slovenia on 26 March, than it would be before the match in London. Strachan, who signed a two-year contract extension last summer, tried to accentuate the positives after the defeat in Slovakia. “We are one point off a play-off place,” he said. “It is a crazy group.” The post Gordon Strachan To Remain As Scotland Coach… For Now appeared first on
Neymar: Tite Can End Brazil’s World Cup Drought Posted: 13 Oct 2016 06:47 PM PDT

Brazil forward Neymar is confident in coach Tite’s ability to help Brazil claim glory at the world cup in Russia. The former Corinthians manager replaced Dunga at Brazil’s helm following a disappointing Copa America Centenario outing. Brazil has notched four wins from the four world cup qualifying matches, sitting a point above Uruguay. Barcelona attacker Neymar has been impressed by his impact and is optimistic about Brazil’s chances of ending a 16-year wait for a World Cup win at Russia 2018. “The arrival of Tite has changed the national team, but not the environment,” he said. “Tite has surprised me a lot as a coach. He is one of the most prepared and one of the best I’ve ever worked with. “It is great to play under Tite. I’m very sure he will take us to the World Cup, perhaps even to a title. “I think he’s organising the the whole setup, doing everything just right.” Brazil host struggling rivals Argentina in their next qualifying fixture on November 10. Borussia Monchengladbach Admit Convincing Chelsea To Sell Andreas Christensen Will Be ‘Tricky’  Posted: 13 Oct 2016 06:42 PM PDT

Borussia Monchengladbach sporting director Max Eberl says it will be “tricky” to do a permanent deal for Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen. The Denmark international is in the second part of a two-year loan deal with Gladbach. The Denmark international has impressed in Germany and was named Gladbach’s Player of the Year last season. Chelsea want the defender to return to Stamford Bridge next summer, but Gladbach have shown they want to keep hold of the 20-year-old. And now the Bundesliga club’s sporting director has revealed they have put themselves in a position to sign the defender, but convincing Chelsea to sell him remains tricky. And Eberl told German newspaper Express: “It is a tricky situation. We’ve positioned ourselves. We need to see when and how we can turn it into reality. We have a very good relationship with Chelsea.” The post Borussia Monchengladbach Admit Convincing Chelsea To Sell Andreas Christensen Will Be ‘Tricky’  appeared first on
Swansea’s New Manager Bob Bradley Opens Up About MLS Coaches And Fitness Concerns Posted: 13 Oct 2016 06:33 PM PDT

Bob Bradley believes his appointment as Swansea head coach will help pave the way for more managers from Major League Soccer to work in the Premier League. Former USA manager Bradley is the first American to manage a Premier League team, after leaving French club Le Havre to replace the sacked Francesco Guidolin. “We’re still growing as a football country. We’ve made progress,” said Bradley. “When MLS grows, some big names start to play there, the attention gets bigger rather than just every four years, but we’re still growing. “I’m one of the older coaches and you have to work and get experience to hope to get an opportunity, but there are other coaches who are going in the right direction. [Numbers of] players and coaches, referees, fans, journalists are growing.” Speaking ahead of his first game in charge, Saturday’s clash at Arsenal, Bradley said: “Getting fitness levels back up is 100% a target. “There are different styles of managers, everybody finds a way that works for them, but I still believe that football fitness and sharpness comes largely from training. “The players have been incredibly respectful towards Francesco, but I think you would also find that they felt that kind of training had gone away a little bit. “So, when I talk about the good response I’ve had so far, I think the way I have always done training and the different ideas I have, fits with how they think it needs to be done. “I have not sat down with them to hear how Brendan Rodgers or Roberto Martinez, or Michael Laudrup did it, but I’m sure there will be similarities. My sense is that the sharpness, the extra bit of fitness and quickness – some of them felt that dropped a little bit. “We are trying hard to re-establish training that is going to bring that back to a really good level.” The post Swansea’s New Manager Bob Bradley Opens Up About MLS Coaches And Fitness Concerns appeared first on
Hull City Confirm Mike Phelan As Permanent Manager Posted: 13 Oct 2016 06:27 PM PDT

Hull have confirmed Mike Phelan as their manager on a permanent basis. Speaking to the club website, Phelan, who took over in the summer after Steve Bruce’s departure, said: “It’s been a while in coming, but I’m happy with the position I am now in and looking forward to the challenge ahead. “It has taken time but things have to be done correctly with these matters. What is important now is that we move forward and help this squad of players be successful for this football club. “It’s exciting to step over that threshold into management, and I’m looking forward to working with this group of players that has done so well so far. “The support I have received from everyone has been magnificent and I want that to continue because the challenges ahead are huge. The fans have been excellent through the last few months and the players have given me their full backing.” The post Hull City Confirm Mike Phelan As Permanent Manager appeared first on

“Vincent Janssen Sold For The Right Price” – AZ Alkmaar Posted: 13 Oct 2016 06:10 PM PDT

AZ Alkmaar technical director Max Huiberts has rubbished claims Tottenham overpaid for Vincent Janssen. The striker moved to White Hart Lane from the Dutch side in the summer for a transfer fee of £17m. The 22-year-old has so far failed to live up to that price tag having scored just one goal for his new club. Despite this, Huiberts does not believe that Tottenham overpaid for Janssen and has backed him to come good in England. “It was said that it was ridiculous that we asked for more than £10m for Vincent because he plays for AZ. But then I think, why?” he told magazine AZ Spreekt. “He is the top scorer in the Netherlands and the number one striker for the Oranje. Vincent had already reached the top in the Eredivisie. “I am sure that he will adapt quickly to the level of the Premier League.” The post “Vincent Janssen Sold For The Right Price” – AZ Alkmaar appeared first on

Valencia are set to offer reported Manchester United target Fran Villalba a new deal to keep him out of Premier League clutches, according to Valencia-based Super Deporte. The 18-year-old midfielder made his Valencia debut during Gary Neville’s time in charge and his agent, Vicente Fores, told Sport Witness the Old Trafford club had “made contact to know his situation.” “We’ve just started talking, it’s up to United,” Fores said, before adding: “I reckon [Valencia] will make it hard.” Villalba, who made his La Liga debut against Villarreal in December 2015, has represented Spain at all youth levels up to Under 19s. Arsene Wenger Tells Barcelona To Stay Away From Bellerin  Posted: 13 Oct 2016 06:03 PM PDT

Arsene Wenger has warned Barcelona that Arsenal will fight to keep standout right-back Hector Bellerin. Spain international Hector Bellerin, who left Barcelona for north London as a 16-year-old, has been reportedly linked with a return to Barcelona. Barcelona vice-president Jordi Mestre was quoted last month describing the 21-year-old as a “great player”, but Wenger is adamant Bellerin’s future lies at Arsenal. “He has nearly three years to go, we always try to get the players to the [financial] level where we think they deserve to be,” Wenger said. “We will try to extend his contract, his long-term future is here. “He has been absolutely fantastic. His first game was a nightmare. The season before he was at Watford where he didn’t play. His progress has been brilliant because he has absolutely top mental strength.” The post Arsene Wenger Tells Barcelona To Stay Away From Bellerin  appeared first on
